PAT Testing - Why it's Business Essential

PAT testing is a reliable way to test the electrics and electrical items within a business to make sure they are safe for everyone to use.  Currently, there is no legal requirement for your business to have PAT testing done but there are some strong regulations in place that mean it is essential for your business.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) expects businesses to conduct PAT testing.  That’s because you need to do it to be compliant with a number of regulations including:

  • Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974
  • The Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989
  • The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations of 1998
  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations of 1999

If you fail to comply with these there are fines of up to £5000 and even six months in prison.  And there are examples of much bigger fines for companies where the case has gone to crown court.  This is rare but shows how serious HSE takes these situations.

The other big reason is that it protects you and your employees.  By having PAT testing done, you can be confident in the electrical systems within the business and sure all appliances and equipment is safe.  PAT testing is a key part of your health and safety process and can save people from serious injuries or even worse which can come from poor condition electrical equipment.
